BELLEVUE – An 18-year-old woman died Sunday from injuries suffered from a 35- to 40-foot jump from an overpass onto Interstate 405, possibly landing on a truck, Bellevue Police said.
Police have determined that the fall off the NE Eighth St. overpass at about 6:44 p.m. Saturday was a suicide. Authorities said events immediately before and after the 18-year-old jumped remain unclear. She may have fallen onto the top of a truck-trailer combination and been carried a short distance before landing on the pavement.
The family of the young woman, a Bellevue resident, has been notified, but authorities said her identity would be released at a later time by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.
A witness told police she saw a woman sitting on a guard rail as she drove under the overpass while going north on I-405. The witness immediately called 911. Police have asked commercial drivers who were driving northbound on I-405 through Bellevue on Saturday evening to closely inspect the tops of their vehicles and trailers. “Damage may not be evident, but minor fabric impressions, scuffs and smudges of road grime may be visible,” a Bellevue news release said.
Witnesses to the accident were urged to call 911 and asked to be transferred to the Bellevue Police Department. Anonymous calls can be made to Crime Stoppers at 800-CRIME-13.
