Recently there have been several letters opposing the hunting of snow geese in the Stanwood area. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but it would be nice if any of these people knew what they were talking about. The Aug. 12 letter, “Offer sanctuary to geese, not genocide,” talks about allowing “private hunts on private land.” “We have taken the entire habitat, they now have fewer and fewer places to live, ” and “We should be offering sanctuary, not genocide.”
The hunts are not private, but are open to licensed hunters who pay high fees to hunt and preserve the habitat and resource. These geese have been migrating here for hundreds of years, and the farms and produce are not their natural habitat. Due to farming the geese have more habitat than ever, as their increased numbers prove. Hunters harvest a minute portion of the goose population. It’s not genocide, which the writer would know if you had ever been goose hunting.
Lastly, the letters states, “the majority of the public is against hunting in all its forms.” Says who? What study? Prove it or don’t say it.
