Cascade’s Shaw wins North singles

MOUNT VERNON – Cascade’s Clayton Shaw won the Wesco North singles championship and the division’s top seed in next week’s District 1 tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Marysville-Pilchuck’s Michal Niewiadomski Thursday at Mount Vernon High School.

Niewiadomski will be the second seed.

The Lake Stevens team of Craig Miller and Chad Jerde captured the doubles title with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Steven Winkels and Brandon Whited of Cascade.

Shaw reached the final with a 6-0, 6-0 semifinal win over Ryan Arndt of Lake Stevens. Niewiadomski defeated Snohomish’s Zach Gordon, 7-5, 6-2 in their semifinal.

Gordon will play Arndt for third and fourth place today.

Gordon qualified for the district meet with a 6-1, 6-2 consolation win over Jared Checkeye of Arlington. Arndt survived his consolation match, beating Cascade’s Colten Brandenburg, 6-2, 6-3.

Miller and Jerde defeated Drew McCutchen and Sean McClurken of Stanwood, 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals. Winkels and Whited beat Kellen Reimers and Andy Bell of Snohomish in the semis.

McCutchen and McClurken then lost to Zach Tafoya and Daniel Redfern of Stanwood, 6-3, 6-1. Reimers and Bell fell 6-4, 6-2 to play-in winners Riley Mahoney and Kent Herman of Monroe.

Tafoya and Redfern will play Mahoney and Herman for third place today.
