PITTSBURGH — University of Pittsburgh football coach Dave Wannstedt is getting a contract extension, the second he’s received since being hired before the 2005 season.
The former Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins coach already was under contract through 2012. The length of the new extension was not immediately available Tuesday.
Wannstedt had a 16-19 record in his first three seasons, receiving his first extension hours before Pitt upset then-No. 2 West Virginia 13-9 to end the 2007 season.
The Panthers were a combined 19-7 in 2008 and 2009, going 10-3 and winning the Meineke Car Care Bowl by beating North Carolina 19-17 last season. They lost to Cincinnati 45-44 to end the regular season, costing them an appearance in a BCS bowl game.
