Prep boys swimming: Shorewood defeats defending champs

SHORELINE — Shorewood, last season’s state 4A fourth-place finisher, defeated last season’s state 4A champion Snohomish 115-68 Thursday at Shoreline Pool in a non-conference meet in which eight 4A state meet qualifying times were achieved.

“Setting the qualifying times allows you to have a better training buildup,” Shorewood head coach Scott Kelley said, “and it is greatly to their advantage later in the season because we try to get them a quick little rest.

“This wasn’t one of those meets that we really geared up for. It is neat to know that we beat the state champs from last year, it is a good feeling.”

Snohomish got off the blocks and posted a state qualifing time in the first event of the meet, winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 43.30 seconds. Logan Goodman then won the 200 freestyle for Snohomish, extending the Panthers’ lead.

But Shorewood’s Bryan Michaels and Thor Stenfjord placed 1-2 in the 50 freestyle with state qualifying times of 22.74 and 22.77, respectively, something that came as quite a shock to Kelley.

“That is an off event for those guys (Michaels and Stenfjord) because they are long distance guys,” Kelley said. “I was pleasantly surprised that they both got state qualifying times in that event.”

The most competitive event of the night was the 100 freestyle, as Snohomish’s Garren Riechel swam a 48.61 and finishing right behind was Stenfjord with a 48.79.

“It can be pretty intense, the guys get all riled up,” Kelley said.

Riechel met the state standard in the 100 breaststroke with a 57.81 and Shorewood’s Michaels also swam a state qualifying time of 59.83, something that was a bit of a shock to the Shorewood team.

“The 100 breaststroke was interesting because Bryan (Michaels) doesn’t expect anyone to beat him,” Kelley added.

Shorewood will face off against Kamiak, last season’s state runner-up, on Tuesday.
