BELLINGHAM — Coupeville moved on to the 1A Bi-District playoffs Thursday, defeating Meridian 1-0 by winning a shootout 5-4.
Evan Coleman played goalkeeper for the first 89 minutes of the game, but Coupeville put in Isaac Wacker for the final minute of overtime and the shootout to utilize Wacker’s speed and close-range shot reaction, according to coach Paul Mendes.
“He looks so quick in practice he has gotten the nickname, El Gato, the cat,” Mendes said of Wacker’s reflexes and jumping ability.
Coleman took the decision in stride.
“Evan took it real well, he understood that we are a team,” Mendes said.
The move paid off when Wacker stopped the first of Meridian’s shootout attempts with a diving save. Coupeville (10-8 overall) went on to score all five of its shootout attempts, capped off when Mitch Stevenson locked up the victory on the final penalty kick.
Mendes said the victory moved Coupeville further than it has ever been in school history. Coupeville will play King’s for the District 1 championship at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Harbor High School.
“They realize that each successful game we have from here on out is taking us somewhere we have never been before,” he said.
Dakota Huntley was in goal for Meridian, whose record was not reported.
King’s 5, Lynden Christian 2: At Shoreline, King’s moved on to the 1A Bi-District playoffs behind two-goal performances by Trevor Bartels and Nick Swanson. Bartels (Jake Hibbard assist) got King’s on the board in the 24th minute. Nick Swanson (Bartels) scored in the 37th minute, and again in the 39th minute (unassisted). Brett Simons scored the fourth goal for King’s in the 59th minute, and Bartels scored the fifth goal in the 61st minute. Lynden Christian scored in the 42nd and 70th minutes, the goal scorers were not reported. Aaron Van Gorkum was in goal for King’s (13-4 overall) in the first half, he was relieved by Matt Matysic in the second half. Lynden Christian’s goalkeeper and record were not reported.
Sultan 3, Anacortes 1: At Anacortes, Alex Nicholas scored an unassisted goal in the 69th minute to break a 1-1 tie and teammate Justin Swift cemented the victory in the 78th on a Nathan Barnhill assist as the Turks qualified for the 2A District 1 tournament with the play-in victory over Anacortes. Sultan’s Axel Romeijn (Barnhill assist) scored in the game’s first minute and John Sherman (Scott Everton assist) responded in the eighth for the Seahawks. Shane Phipps was the Anacortes goalkeeper and Steven Losleben and Jake Murray split netminding duties for the Turks (7-7 in league, 9-8-1 overall).
