PREP ROUNDUP: Everett tennis team improves to 5-0

EVERETT — The undefeated Everett High School boys tennis team continued its hot start to the 2009 season Friday by defeating Cascade 6-1 in a Wesco North meet.

“For us it’s big,” Everett coach Tim Boyd said of his squad’s 5-0 start. “I think the kids worked hard over the summer. They have really shown their competitiveness, and hard work is paying off for them.”

Boyd was impressed with his No. 2 doubles team of Stephen Bellrichard and Craig Plendl. The duo came back from a 7-5 loss in the first set to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.

“I think what they did was … a good job of changing strategies,” Boyd said, adding that Bellrichard and Plendl started to relax more in the second and third sets.

The No. 3 singles match also proved to be exciting, Cascade’s Juan Ceja was shut out in the first set 6-0, but came back to win 0-6, 6-2, 7-5.

“Both players played really well,” Boyd said.

Despite the lopsided victory, Boyd said the meet was competitive.

“Sometimes scores don’t show the whole thing,” he said. “I think it was a good match for both teams.”
