PREP TRACK ROUNDUP

EVERETT — Gearing up for the Eason.

That’s what the Everett and Cascade track and field squads were doing Thursday afternoon at Everett Memorial Stadium.

With Oak Harbor also in the mix, the Seagulls boys and girls both won their respective meets on an afternoon many saw as a tuneup for the prestigious Eason Invitational, which will be held on Saturday in Snohomish.

“Everyone pretty much kept their cards close to the vest,” said Cascade coach Steve Bertrand. “We were laying low for the Eason, keeping ‘em fresh and ready to run.”

Cascade and Everett are just two of the more than 60 schools expected to participate in tomorrow’s meet, one of the the state’s biggest.

On the boys side, the Seagulls beat Oak Harbor by eight points, using their deep squad to hold off the Wildcats.

“They’re a well-coached team with a fine tradition,” Bertrand said of Everett. “They’ve got some top notch blue chippers and a cadre of depth that helps them.”

Six different Gulls won events, with Mike Daly winning both hurdles.

The girls meet was even closer than the boys as Everett edged the Wildcats by two points with the Bruins just eight back of Oak Harbor.

Although winning just five of the 18 events, the Everett girls depth, just like the boys, proved the difference

Oak Harbor’s Shantae Young won three events (100-meter dash, long jump, triple jump) and Cascade seniors Katy Gross (100 hurdles, high jump) and Brittany Jones (discus, shot put) each won two events.
