Prep volleyball: Bailey’s 25 kills help Cedarcrest topple South Whidbey 3-1

LANGLEY — Christine Hillestad has high expectations for her Cedarcrest volleyball team.

A year after placing fifth at the 2A District 1 tournament and barely missing a chance at a state berth, the Red Wolves head coach says her team is, “hunting towards that again.”

The Red Wolves (2-0 in league and overall) made a small step towards Hillestad’s goal with a 25-12, 15-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory over South Whidbey Thursday night in a Cascade Conference match at South Whidbey High School.

“My expectations are high for us, not making state didn’t sit well with me,” Hillestad said.

Shannon Bailey had 25 kills, Lindsey Smith added 41 assists and Sara Houser had nine kills and four aces, two coming in the game four clincher to lead the Red Wolves.

Cedarcrest bounced back from a game two loss to defeat South Whidbey (1-1) 25-23 in the third game.

“We had some unforced errors and cut down on those, in the third game,” Hillestad said.

Houser served 11 of Cedarcrest’s 25 game four points.

King’s 3, Lakewood 0: At Shoreline, Jordan Irish had eight kills, three blocks and three aces, Dionna Kirton had seven kills, Rosy Boggs had six kills and four aces, and Anna Cesari had 23 assists and three aces as King’s (2-0 league and overall) defeated Lakewood (0-2) 25-22, 25-14, 25-12 in Cascade Conference action.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Sultan 0: At Everett, Archbishop Murphy (2-0 league and overall) swept all three matches (25-19, 25-6, 25-4) en route to the Cascade Conference win over Sultan (0-2). The Wildcats had 24 kills, 23 assists and 19 aces in the match.

Granite Falls 3, Coupeville 2: At Coupeville, the defense of Brennan Johnson (34 digs) allowed Granite Falls to come back and get the 19-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-10 Cascade Conference victory after dropping the first two games. The win puts Granite Falls at 1-1 league and overall. Coupeville is 1-1 league and 2-1 overall.

Everett 3, Glacier Peak 0: At Everett, Jody Barhanovich had 13 digs and 12 assists, Mollie Postma had 17 assists and Emily Liger added 14 kills and four aces as the Seagulls (3-1 overall) defeated Glacier Peak (0-3) 25-6, 25-13, 25-18 in non-league action.

Monroe 3, Mariner 0: At Monroe, Kylin Munoz of Monroe had 15 kills, nine aces and six digs and her sister Kendal had 11 assists in the 25-6, 25-7, 25-15 non-league victory over Mariner. Megan Birch had 10 kills and seven aces in the win, which moved Monroe to 4-0 overall. Mariner is 0-4.

Stanwood 3, Jackson 0: At Stanwood, Kelsey Kanehen had seven kills and four aces, Leah Titus had 14 digs and Chelsea Campbell had 21 assists as Stanwood (4-0 overall) defeated Jackson (1-2) 25-15, 25-21, 25-19 in non-league action.

Mountlake Terrace 3, Cascade 0: At Everett, Christine Jenson had 25 assists, Leah Lechtenberg had 13 kills, Meagan Brown had eight kills, and Stephanie McGee had 14 kills as Mountlake Terrace (2-1 overall) defeated Cascade 25-22, 26-24, 25-18 in non-league action. Danielle Love had eight kills and Esther Noe had 13 digs and served 14-for-14 to lead Cascade (1-3).

Kamiak 3, Oak Harbor 1: At Oak Harbor, Bailey Jones had 15 kills, Bryce Larson had 14 kills and Kay Ahnee added 29 assists as the Knights (3-0 overall) defeated the Wildcats (1-3) 25-20, 27-29, 25-20, 25-10 in non-league action. Jennifer Jansen had 12 kills and five bblocks, Jessica Muzzall had nine kills and six blocks, Kelsey Terrazas-Cooley had three aces and Melany Cone had 30 assists gfor Oak Harbor.

Snohomish 3, Shorecrest 2: At Snohomish, after losing in straight games earlier this week to Edmonds-Woodway, Snohomish turned the tide to defeat Shorecrest 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10 in a non-league match. Three Snohomish players had double-digit kills with Shelby Souther, Maddie Fouts and Joanna Balin making 17, 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Snohomish setter Karla Nelson had 42 assists and teammate Natalie Kaltbrunner had 23 digs in the contest, which brings Snohomish to 3-1 overall. Shorecrest is now 1-2.

Lake Stevens 3, Meadowdale 1: At Lake Stevens, Chloe Roft (10 blocks) and Ashley Kelly-Norling (nine kills) led Lake Stevens to the 25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 25-21 non-conference victory over Meadowdale (0-3 overall). Marchelle Bostic added 30 assists for the Vikings (1-3). Lynsey Rohrbach (10 kills, four blocks), Madi Sieger (17 digs) and Megan Nelson (24 assists) led Meadowdale.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Edmonds-Woodway 2: At Marysville, the Tomahawks edged out Edmonds-Woodway 25-22, 17-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-4 to earn the non-league victory. For Marysville-Pilchuck (1-3 overall), Jadelyn Thompson had 12 kills and 23 digs, Emily Boerger had 15 kills, Taylor Olsen had 23 digs and Brittany Fitzmaurisce had 46 assists. Leigh Fishback led the Warriors (2-1) with 41 assists and 11 digs. Carlin Fellows added 18 kills and 12 digs and Alex Storino had 34 digs.

Shorewood 3, Arlington 2: At Arlington, Laura Postor’s 27 digs led Shorewood to a 27-25, 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 15-13 non-league win over Arlington. Kelsey England added 18 kills and Anne Lundquist had 13 kills and three blocks for Shorewood (3-1 overall). Kirstin Wright (32 digs), Kelsey Czaban (33 assists) and Breanna Covey (13 kills and 18 digs) led the Eagles (2-2).

Darrington 3, Orcas Island 0: At Darrington, Mandy Powell had 21 digs, seven kills and five aces to lead Darrington (1-1 overall) to the Northwest 1A/2B League win, 25-14, 25-22, 26-24 over Orcas Island. Hailey Wales added six kills and six aces and Caresse Baker had five kills and four aces for the Loggers.

Shoreline Christian 3, Friday Harbor 2: At Shoreline, Shoreline Christian (2-0 in league, 3-0 overall) rebounded in the fifth match to win the Northwest 1A/2B game (25-21, 25-16, 25-27, 17-25, 15-12) against Friday Harbor (0-1, 0-1). Angie DeKoekkoek had 14 kills and Andres DeKoekkoek had 11 digs for Shoreline Christian.

Highland Christian 3, Grace Academy 0: At Arlington, Highland Christian (1-2 overall) defeated Grace Academy (0-2 overall) 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 in the non-league match.
