PREP VOLLEYBALL/SWIMMING: Loss to Edmonds-Woodway provides Snohomish with goal

SNOHOMISH — The season’s still young.

That was Snohomish volleyball coach Kris Jones’s main thought after Edmonds-Woodway defeated her Panthers in non-conference play, 25-14, 25-18, 25-21 Tuesday at Snohomish High School.

“It’s early,” Jones said, “so there’s lots of time to work hard before things start counting.”

After falling behind in the match 0-2, Snohomish (0-2 overall) jumped out to a 21-14 lead in the third set, thanks to some great serving by Megan Rice.

“She totally turned it on,” Jones said. “She had eight aces in a row and got us up to that 21.”

Then the Warriors (2-0) came back with some serving of their own and took the next 11 straight points to seal the victory.

Ashley Kelly had 11 kills, Leigh Fishback had 36 assists and Rebecca Stern had 12 digs for E-W.

However it was a freshman that caught the eye of Jones.

“I’m sure she’s been mentioned before,” Jones said of first year player Miah Diirell. “She’s incredible. She’s one to watch.”

Diirell finished with seven kills, seven aces and a great impression on Jones, who also mentioned senior co-captain Haley Scott who added 10 kills for the Warriors.

“Edmonds-Woodway has a really good team,” Jones said. “They have some really hard hitters. …They really got us on the serving.”

Rice finished with four kills along with her eight aces and Julie Nelson added five kills for the Panthers, who need to put this loss behind them Jones says.

“It’s really early, so it’s good to have things to work on,” Jones said. “We’re definitely looking forward and not dwelling on an off-night.”
