Shorecrest nails down the top 3A spot in the Wesco South

SHORELINE – The Shorecrest volleyball team got off to a fast start Thursday en route to a 3-0 victory over Lynnwood in a Wesco South 3A showdown.

The Scots (8-1 league, 13-1 overall), who earned the Wesco South No. 1 seed for the 3A crossover tournament, rolled past Lynnwood with a 25-8 first-set victory. Shorecrest finished the sweep, winning 25-22 and 25-19.

“This was a good win for us,” Shorecrest coach Dave Morehouse said. “We got off to a quick start and played pretty consistently the rest of the way.”

Shorecrest hosts the Cascade Conference’s No. 2 seed South Whidbey in the loser-out crossover meet on Monday and the Royals, the Wesco South No. 2 seed travels to the Cascade Conference’s No. 1 seed Cedarcrest.

“It is a big advantage for us to play at home, but we definitely expect a good match out of South Whidbey,” Morehouse said.

Anna Herold led the Scots with 27 assists and 13 digs and reserve player Karleen Knudsen had eight kills and 11 digs. Knudsen replaced injured player Mary Tseng, who is suffering from a high ankle sprain and is questionable for the game against South Whidbey.

“Karleen really did a good job filling the shoes for Mary tonight,” Morehouse said. “We’re unsure right now if Mary will be ready to come back. She rolled her ankle this past week and has a high ankle sprain. It is hard to tell if she’ll be ready.”

Daylene Wilkie had seven kills and Megan Swanson added five kills and 16 digs for Lynnwood (6-3, 8-6).

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Mariner 1: At Everett, Erin Greenwood had 21 kills and four blocks and teammate Kelly Davis contributed 10 kills for Edmonds-Woodway (4-4 league, 6-7 overall) in a 21-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18 Wesco South victory. Sarah Morris had 28 assists and Shaina McLaughlin added eight kills for Mariner (2-7, 2-12).

Kamiak 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mountlake Terrace, Kamiak prevailed 25-19, 25-22, 25-9 in the Wesco South match. Kamiak (5-3 league, 9-5 overall), which clinched a 4A District 1 playoff berth with the victory, was led by Stephanie Lau’s 18 kills. Ashley Knutson added six kills and four blocks, Elizabeth Smith had 27 assists and Lauren Poole had 16 digs. For Mountlake Terrace (0-8, 1-12), Bianca Rowland had seven kills, Jessica Schrock had six kills and Rachel Stanley had 14 assists.

Everett 3, Jackson 0: At Mill Creek, Everett won the Wesco South match, 25-15, 25-17, 25-23. Jennifer Luatua had 10 kills and 18 digs and Nicole Barhanovich added 31 assists for Everett (9-0 league, 14-0 overall). Kacey Kahawaii had 18 digs and Jessi Ramback was 12-for-12 serving with two aces for Jackson (4-4, 8-5).

Meadowdale 3, Shorewood 0: At Lynnwood, Krystal Craig served seven aces and had 20 assists and Caitlyn Rohrbach added 12 digs for Meadowdale (2-6 league, 4-9 overall), in its 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 Wesco South victory. Stephanie West had an ace and two kills for Shorewood (2-6, 3-9).

Stanwood 3, Cascade 2: At Stanwood, on senior night, Stanwood roared from behind, using improved ball control to win the Wesco North match, 27-25, 23-25, 23-25, 25-11, 15-8. Megan Amundson had 23 kills, Amanda Allred dished out 36 assists and Maggie McKinney was 14-for-14 serving for Stanwood (4-3 league, 7-6 overall). Cascade is 0-7, 0-10.

Oak Harbor 3, Mount Vernon 0: At Mount Vernon, led by Heidi McNeill’s 16 kills and five blocks, Oak Harbor (6-1 in division, 12-2 overall), which clinched a 4A District 1 playoff berth with the victory, won the Wesco North match, 25-16, 25-21, 25-23. Ashley Kingma contributed 19 assists and Miranda Thiel added 18 digs to the Wildcats’ win. Tara Cunningham recorded 10 kills and Katie Moyer added 22 assists for Mount Vernon (2-5, 6-7).

Lake Stevens 3, Monroe 0: At Lake Stevens, Chelsey Smith had 13 kills, Rachel Boehme added nine kills and Molly Bradshaw was 12-for-12 serving for Lake Stevens (5-3 league, 9-5 overall) in the 25-22, 15-25, 25-20, 25-16 Wesco North win. Kelsey Brennan was 12-for-12 with five kills to lead Monroe (4-3, 7-6).

Snohomish 3, Arlington 0: At Arlington, Ashley Barnet had nine kills and teammate Megan McGinnis had six kills to lead Snohomish (7-0, 12-1) to a 25-11, 25-9, 25-19 Wesco North victory. Shayna Prause had nine kills and Nikki Bobadilla added four kills to lead Arlington (1-6, 2-12).

South Whidbey 3, Lakewood 0: South Whidbey (8-4 league, 8-5 overall) made quick work of its 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 Cascade Conference victory over Lakewood (2-8, 2-11). Janelle Iversen and Caitie Newman had 10 and eight kills, respectively, for the Falcons and Jessi Eaton added 27 assists. Chrissy Phillips had four kills for Lakewood, which qualified for the 2A District 1 tournament despite the loss due to Sultan’s defeat by Archbishop Murphy.

Cedarcrest 3, Granite Falls 0: At Duvall, Britney Carlson had 10 assists and four digs, Karly Regalia added six kills and Kara Russell contributed eight assists and three digs to lead Cedarcrest (11-1 league, 12-2 overall) to the 25-11, 25-11, 25-10 Cascade Conference victory. Michaela Dudder led Granite Falls (2-8, 2-11) with seven kills. Granite Falls qualified for the 2A District 1 tournament despite the loss due to Sultan’s defeat by Archbishop Murphy.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Sultan 1: At Sultan, Ally Gotz’s pancake dig midway through the third set turned the Cascade Conference match in Archbishop Murphy’s favor. The Wildcats, who trailed 14-6 in the third set at the time, went on to win 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-11. Kayelynne Huggins and Kaitlin Hoban added nine and eight aces, respectively, for Archbishop Murphy (6-6 league, 7-7 overall). Sultan is 0-11, 0-12.

Coupeville 3, La Conner 2: At Coupeville, in a battle for first place in the A Division of the Northwest 1A/B League, Coupeville prevailed 25-23, 22-25, 25-9, 23-25, 16-14. Coupeville (7-0 league, 8-0 overall) used steady defense, led by Beth Mouw’s 16 digs, to pull it out down the stretch. Mindy Horr added 25 assists, Heather Fakkema was 27-for-27 serving with six aces, and Kirsty Croghan had 12 kills for the Wolves. La Conner is 6-1, 8-3.

Darrington 3, Mount Vernon Christian 0: At Mount Vernon, Lindsey Bryson had 31 assists and Ashley Armstrong had 10 kills to lead Darrington (6-3 league, 9-3 overall) in a 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 Northwest 1A/B victory over Mount Vernon Christian (3-6, 7-6).
