Silvertips fall to Chiefs

SPOKANE – The Everett Silvertips have always been a hard-working team. Perhaps that’s what the Silvertips have so much difficulty when given several days off.

For the fourth time this season Everett lost after a lengthy break, falling 3-0 to the Spokane Chiefs on Wednesday night in a Western Hockey League game.

Everett (11-7-2-2), which was playing for the first time in five days since returning from it’s five-game road trip through the East Division, has played four times this season with four days rest or more. The Silvertips have lost all four times.

Gary Gladue, J.P. Szaszkiewicz and Steven Gillen scored goals for Spokane (7-10-1-1) and Jim Watt made 25 saves for his second shutout of the season.

Everett goalie Michael Wall made 29 saves.

Spokane took the lead at 15 minutes, 3 seconds of the first period. The Chiefs took advantage of a turnover in the Everett zone, and Gladue’s shot from the point deflected off traffic in front of the net and past Wall to make it 1-0. The goal was Gladue’s first of the season.

Everett looked like it tied it at 17:48 when, with the Silvertips on a five-on-three power play, Karel Hromas put the puck into the net. However, the goal was waived off because of a slashing penalty on Everett’s Torrie Wheat.

Spokane then doubled its lead at 14:07 of the second period. Everett again had trouble clearing the puck from its own zone. Spokane put it back in front and Szaszkiewicz poked it in to make it 2-0. The goal was Szaszkiewicz’s first of the season and his WHL career.

The Chiefs polished off the scoring with 1:10 remaining when Gillen scored into an empty net for his third goal of the season.

Slap shots: Everett captain Mitch Love missed his third straight game because of a lingering chest injury. … Silvertips left wing Brennan Zasitko was named to Team Western (representing Saskatchewan and Manitoba) for the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge on Dec. 28-Jan. 4 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Zasitko is the fourth Everett player chosen for the tournament, joining Team Pacific selections Zach Hamill, Brady Calla and Leland Irving.
