The Sultan band began preparations for its state competition last summer. At the time the band members had no idea they’d face a scheduling conflict.
When the Sultan football team won its preliminary playoff game against Port Townsend, it advanced to the first round of those state playoffs. And the Turks first-round game at Othello Nov. 11 happened to coincide with the band competition.
As it turned out, it wasn’t much of a dilemma for the 60-member band. It voted to support the football team, make the trip to Othello and forego its own state appearance.
"As unselfish as it was, what’s even more impressive is the way that they have shunned accolades for their decision," said Sultan football coach Jim MacDicken.
MacDicken said the football team was duly impressed. It reciprocated by producing signs and banners and decorating the band room.
The band was part of a good-sized Sultan contingent making the trip to Othello. And MacDicken said the band provided inspiration to the team and the crowd during the game.
The band performed its fall concert indoors Nov. 14 and afterwards it was coaxed outside to the stadium to put on the show it would have put on at state.
"It was quite a spectacle," MacDicken said.
