MARYSVILLE — A suspected car thief’s run for freedom ended in the drink and with a zap from an electronic stun gun.
The Mount Vernon man, 44, was arrested Monday for investigation of attempting to elude police, motor vehicle theft and reckless driving. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail.
A witness reported seeing what appeared to be a car theft from a business on the southeast end of the Tulalip Indian Reservation around 4:15 p.m., according to police reports.
Officers from the Tulalip Police Department spotted and then pursued the stolen 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe northbound on 1-5.
Tribal police terminated the chase because the suspect was driving recklessly and posed a danger for other drivers.
The Tahoe reached speeds of more than 100 mph.
It was seen getting off 1-5 at a rest stop near Smokey Point, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office reported.
A witness saw the driver hop out of the Tahoe and run toward a fence and into the rest stop retention pond.
The suspect was shocked with an electronic stun gun. Police reports weren’t clear on whether the device was used before or after the man was in the water.
Police from Arlington, Marysville and the Stillaguamish Tribe along with the Washington State Patrol assisted in containing the suspect.
