Prep cross country/tennis: Arlington outpaces large field in 34th North County meet

MARYSVILLE — Co-ed running didn’t bother Arlington’s cross country team Thursday night.

The Arlington boys scored 29 points to best Lake Stevens (32) for first place at the 34th annual North County Invite at Cedarcrest Golf Course. Everett placed third with 38 points.

Unlike most cross country meets, the North County Invite has boys and girls run together. Instead of dividing the meet by gender, there is a race for each class: Freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.

“It was a good change of pace to have the boys and girls run together,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach Randall Edens said.

In the senior race, Arlington’s Sean Gregory placed fourth. Gregory finished the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 49.54 seconds.

Gregory beat out Lake Stevens runners Drew Larson (16:50.89) and Scott Larson (16:59.80), who finished fifth and sixth respectively.

Brian Sutter of Monroe (16:26.89) edged Chip Jackson of Shorewood (16:28.38) to take first place.

The standout performance, however, was delivered in the junior race by Shorecrest’s Joe McConaughy.

McConaughy blasted past the competition to finish in 16:31.66, easily beating Everett’s Cody MacDougal (16:55.95) and teammate Chris Freeborn (16:58.25) to the finish line.

“McConaughy was the clear cut winner by 20, 24 seconds,” Edens said.

The 34th annual North County Invite was attended by 21 schools and saw 800 runners compete in the event.

“The weather held off and we had pretty decent times as a whole,” Edens said.

Team scores—Arlington 29, Lake Stevens 32, Everett 38, Shorecrest 40, Snohomish 44, Shorewood 51, Archbishop Murphy 57, M-P 59, Monroe 59, Stanwood 65. Also: Cedarcrest 69, King’s 106, Sultan 125, Granite Falls 170, Lakewood 195.
